With the Round of 64 requiring 64 teams, three clubs have been granted automatic byes and will skip the first preliminary round entirely.
The remaining 58 clubs will battle for 29 qualification spots. These 29 winners, combined with the three exempted clubs, will make up the full complement of 32 teams for the second preliminary round (Round of 32).
CAF has divided the participating clubs into five distinct levels based on rankings and geographical considerations:
Level 1 – Top 3 Ranked Clubs
These three highest-ranked sides are exempted from the first preliminary round. They will enter the competition at the second preliminary round stage and will be drawn against teams from Level 5.
Level 2 – 10 Highest-Ranked Clubs
These clubs will face Level 5 teams during the preliminary rounds.
Level 3 – 6 Ranked Clubs
- First round: Drawn against Level 4 teams
- Second round: Can face either Level 3 or Level 4 opponents
Level 4 – 6 Lowest-Ranked Clubs
- First round: Drawn against Level 3 teams
- Second round: Can face either Level 3 or Level 4 opponents
Level 5 – 36 Unranked Clubs
These sides will be drawn against higher-ranked teams across both preliminary rounds.
The official draw will determine the exact path each club must navigate in their bid to reach the prestigious CAF Champions League group stage.
