ELCHE, Spain — Barcelona opened their La Liga title defence with a commanding 5-0 victory over Elche at the Estadio Martínez Valero on Sunday.
Raphinha scored twice, including a first-half penalty, while Fermín López also netted a brace and Karim Adeyemi marked his debut with a goal as the champions produced a clinical attacking display.
Raphinha converted from the spot in the 14th minute after being fouled in the area to give Barcelona an early lead. The Brazilian then turned provider just before half-time, setting up Adeyemi, who finished neatly in the third minute of stoppage time to make it 2-0 at the break.
The visitors continued where they left off after the interval. Raphinha added his second of the evening in the 67th minute, before López struck twice in quick succession — first in the 71st minute and again eight minutes later — to complete the scoring.
Barcelona controlled possession and created a succession of clear chances throughout the match. Their movement in the final third repeatedly stretched the Elche defence, and the finishing was clinical once opportunities arrived.Elche struggled to impose themselves and offered little threat in attack. The home side were unable to contain Barcelona’s fluid forward play and found themselves increasingly stretched as the goals mounted.
The comprehensive win provides an ideal start for Hansi Flick’s side as they begin their campaign. Raphinha’s two goals and an assist underlined his influence, while López’s late double and Adeyemi’s debut strike added further depth to the attacking options.
Barcelona will take confidence from the result and the manner of the performance. Elche, meanwhile, face a difficult start to the season after a heavy home defeat.
Attention now turns to the next fixtures, with Barcelona looking to build on this emphatic opening victory.
