JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Egyptian giants Al Ahly are actively pushing to sign South African winger Thapelo Maseko, but Mamelodi Sundowns remain unwilling to sanction a move to a direct continental rival.
Multiple reports indicate that Al Ahly, along with fellow Egyptian side Pyramids FC and Danish club FC Copenhagen, have submitted offers for the 22-year-old Bafana Bafana international. Sundowns have rejected the approaches so far.
Maseko, who is currently out of favour under coach Miguel Cardoso, has been training alone after being left out of the club’s pre-season tour. The player is understood to be frustrated by the lack of progress on a potential exit despite interest from abroad.
Sundowns’ stance appears consistent with their long-standing policy of not selling key players to clubs they regularly compete against in African competitions. Maseko still has two years remaining on his contract at Chloorkop.
The situation remains fluid as the transfer window continues.
