The 23-year-old from Kano arrived at the club in 2021 as a goalkeeper and former Nigeria U17 international. In 2024, however, a FIFA registration ban prevented Mazembe from signing new foreign players, leaving head coach Lamine N’Diaye short of attacking options.
Standing 1.93 metres tall, Shaibu volunteered to switch to centre-forward. What began as an emergency measure quickly became permanent.
He made his debut as a striker as a second-half substitute against Don Bosco in October 2024. Shortly afterwards he scored twice in a 3-0 win over Panda B52 and continued to make an impact, largely from the bench, with a series of goals and assists in Linafoot matches.
“At first, it was kind of a joke for them—for most of the players and spectators—because they believed I was a goalkeeper and had nothing to offer,” Shaibu later recalled. “They never saw it coming, but to me, it was normal. All I needed was just a chance to prove that I could also play upfront.”
The extension keeps the adaptable attacker at the club beyond the previous June 2026 expiry date. Mazembe value both his loyalty during a difficult period and the aerial presence and finishing ability he has brought to their front line.
Shaibu remains an important squad option as the record Congolese title winners prepare for another season of domestic and continental competition.
