The reigning African champions produced a composed first-half display, with returning stars Asisat Oshoala and Toni Payne both finding the back of the net to hand Coach Justine Madugu’s side a deserved victory over the Teranga Lionesses.
After dominating possession in the opening stages, Nigeria finally broke the deadlock in the 32nd minute when the Super Falcons were awarded a penalty following sustained pressure inside the Senegalese penalty area. Six-time African Women’s Player of the Year, Oshoala, stepped up confidently and converted from the spot to give Nigeria the lead.
The goal marked a memorable return for the experienced forward, who was making her first appearance for the national team since the last WAFCON tournament.
The Super Falcons continued to control proceedings and doubled their advantage before halftime through Toni Payne. The midfielder finished off a flowing attacking move in the 43rd minute, capping off an impressive first-half performance by the hosts.
Nigeria dictated the tempo for large parts of the game, with captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Francisca Ordega and Christy Ucheibe all playing key roles as the Falcons maintained pressure on the Senegalese defence.
Senegal, however, showed resilience late in the encounter and pulled one back in the closing stages to set up a nervy finish. Despite the late pressure, the Super Falcons remained organised defensively and held on to secure the victory.
The encounter served as an important test for Coach Justine Madugu’s squad ahead of the upcoming WAFCON tournament in Morocco, where Nigeria will be aiming to defend their continental crown.
The victory also marked a positive start to Nigeria’s two-match friendly series against Senegal, with both sides expected to meet again in another preparatory clash on June 8 in Ikenne.
For the Super Falcons, the performance offered plenty of positives — particularly the return of experienced stars, attacking fluidity in the first half, and another winning outing as preparations intensify for Africa’s biggest women’s football tournament.
