The University of Alabama star not only won his heat comfortably but also emerged as the fastest qualifier for the NCAA 400m final, reinforcing his status as the man to beat as he bids to successfully defend the national title he won last year.
Competing at the prestigious championships hosted at Hayward Field, Ogazi displayed his trademark composure and power, controlling his race from start to finish. His time of 44.73 seconds was the quickest across all qualifying heats, placing him in prime position ahead of Friday's highly anticipated final.
The Nigerian star has enjoyed a remarkable 2026 season, continuing to establish himself as one of the world's premier quarter-milers. Earlier this year, he shattered records with a series of outstanding performances and arrived in Eugene as one of the favorites for gold.
Ogazi's latest performance sends a strong message to his rivals that he remains firmly on course to retain his NCAA crown. The reigning champion will now turn his attention to Friday's final, where he will look to add another major collegiate title to his growing list of achievements.
Meanwhile, fellow Nigerian athlete David Akhalu gained valuable experience in his debut NCAA Championships appearance. The youngster finished seventh in his 400m heat, crossing the line in 46.21 seconds.
Although Akhalu did not advance to the final, competing on one of collegiate athletics' biggest stages marks an important milestone in his development and provides a solid foundation for future championships.
As the NCAA Championships continue in Eugene, Nigerian athletics fans will be eagerly watching to see whether Ogazi can cap off another brilliant campaign by successfully defending his national collegiate title and further cementing his reputation among the world's elite 400m runners.
