The British star showed excellent tactical awareness throughout the race before unleashing a powerful finishing kick in the closing stages to secure victory ahead of a stacked international field.
The battle for the remaining podium spots provided one of the most dramatic moments of the evening as Poland’s Klaudia Kazimierska surged late to snatch second place right on the finish line from American runner Nikki Hiltz.
Kazimierska crossed in 3:59.24, narrowly edging Hiltz, who finished third in 3:59.26, with just two hundredths of a second separating the pair in a thrilling sprint finish.
Hiltz had taken control of the race heading into the bell lap and looked poised to challenge for victory, but Hunter-Bell responded strongly with around 150 metres remaining before pulling clear down the home straight. Kazimierska then produced a devastating late charge to overtake Hiltz in the final strides.
The victory continues an outstanding 2026 campaign for Hunter-Bell, who has already enjoyed major success this season following her triumph at the World Athletics Indoor Championships earlier in the year. Her performance in Rome further confirms her status as one of the leading contenders in women’s middle-distance running heading into the rest of the Diamond League season.
