Gabriel Tual Storms to Rome Diamond League 800m Victory as Mark English Produces Stunning Late Charge

French middle-distance star Gabriel Tual delivered a brilliant performance at the 2026 Rome Diamond League, clocking a Season’s Best (SB) of 1:43.66 to win a thrilling men’s 800m race at the iconic Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

The European champion showed his class once again on Thursday night, controlling the race before holding off a fierce late challenge from Ireland’s Mark English in one of the standout performances of the meeting.

Mark English produced a sensational final 100m surge, moving from seventh place into second position in dramatic fashion to finish in 1:43.80, also a season’s best. The Irish athlete’s explosive finish nearly denied Tual victory as the pair crossed the line separated by only fractions of a second.

Italy’s Francesco Pernici completed the podium with a strong run of 1:43.97 in front of the home crowd.

The race unfolded at a blistering pace from the opening lap, with the field staying tightly packed before Gabriel Tual made his decisive move in the closing stages. However, it was Mark English’s remarkable finishing speed that captured attention, as the Irishman powered through the field in the final straight to secure second place.

Tual’s victory continues his impressive form on the international circuit, while English’s performance further confirms his status as one of Europe’s elite 800m runners this season.

The Rome Diamond League meeting featured several world-class athletes across multiple events, but the men’s 800m delivered one of the most exciting finishes of the night as fans inside the Stadio Olimpico witnessed a dramatic battle between two of Europe’s finest middle-distance runners.
