FIFA has officially confirmed that Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey will be unable to travel to Canada for the Black Stars’ opening match against Panama after his visa application was denied by Canadian authorities.
The development comes as a major setback for Ghana ahead of their highly anticipated fixture, with the experienced midfielder now ruled out of traveling from the team's base camp in Boston, United States, to Canada for the encounter scheduled for June 17.
In an official statement, FIFA clarified that it has no authority over the immigration decisions of host nations and cannot intervene in visa-related matters.
"FIFA can confirm that player Thomas Partey will be unable to travel from Ghana's Team Base Camp in Boston, USA, to Canada for their first match against Panama on Wednesday, 17 June, as his visa application has been refused by the Canadian government," the governing body stated.
FIFA further emphasized that decisions regarding visas remain solely under the jurisdiction of the host country's government.
"FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas. As with previous FIFA events, the host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country."
The news represents a significant blow for Ghana, as Partey has been one of the team's most influential players and a key figure in midfield over the years. His absence is expected to force the Black Stars' coaching staff into a tactical reshuffle ahead of the crucial encounter against Panama.
The visa refusal has also sparked widespread discussion among football fans, with many questioning how a player selected for an international FIFA competition could be prevented from entering a host nation. However, FIFA's statement makes it clear that the organization has no role in the final decision-making process regarding immigration and border entry.
Ghana will now have to prepare for their opening match without one of their most experienced stars as they seek to make a strong start against Panama.
With kickoff approaching, all eyes will be on how the Black Stars adapt to Partey's absence and whether they can overcome the setback in one of their most important fixtures of the tournament.
