The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially parted ways with Otto Addo as head coach of the senior men’s national team, the Black Stars, with immediate effect.
The decision was announced on Tuesday, hours after Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Germany in an international friendly in Stuttgart — their fourth consecutive loss in friendlies.
This comes just 72 days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where Ghana are drawn in a tough group alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
GFA Statement
In an official statement, the GFA said: “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) have parted ways with the head coach of the senior men’s national team (Black Stars), Otto Addo, effective immediately.”
The Association thanked Addo for his contribution to the team and wished him well in his future endeavours. They added that the new technical direction for the Black Stars will be communicated in due course.
Background
Otto Addo, who was in his second spell as Black Stars coach, guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 World Cup. However, recent results have been disappointing:
- Heavy 5-1 loss to Austria
- 2-1 defeat to Germany
- A winless run in recent friendlies
Many fans and analysts had expressed concern over the team’s defensive organisation and lack of cutting edge in attack during these warm-up games.
What Next for the Black Stars?
With the World Cup less than three months away, the GFA now faces the urgent task of appointing a new coach (or interim technical team) to prepare the squad for their opening Group match against Panama on June 17.
The timing of the decision has shocked many in African football circles, as it leaves Ghana without a permanent head coach at such a critical stage.
We wish Otto Addo the best in his next chapter and hope the Black Stars can quickly stabilise ahead of what promises to be a very challenging World Cup campaign.
