The Heavy Price of Fame: Tributes Pour in for Anthony Joshua's Two Team Members Killed in Tragic Ogun Road Crash

SAGAMU, OGUN STATE – The global boxing community and the nation of Nigeria are in a state of shock and mourning following a devastating road accident involving two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. The crash, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, has tragically claimed the lives of two of the boxer's closest associates.

The Incident

The accident happened around 11:00 AM local time along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, specifically in the Makun axis near the Sagamu Interchange. Joshua was traveling as a passenger in a Lexus SUV (registration KRD 850 HN) when the vehicle reportedly lost control during an overtaking maneuver.

According to a statement from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the vehicle was traveling at a high speed before it slammed into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

A Heartbreaking Loss

While Anthony Joshua miraculously survived with minor injuries, the impact of the crash was fatal for two others in the vehicle. Matchroom Boxing and 258 Management have since confirmed the identities of the deceased as Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele (some reports also identify them as Kevin Ayodele), both described as longtime friends and integral members of Joshua’s team.

Eyewitnesses at the scene described a harrowing rescue operation as bystanders and FRSC officials worked to extricate the champion from the wreckage. Footage circulating online showed a visibly shaken Joshua being helped from the vehicle, surrounded by shattered glass.

State of Health and Tributes

A joint statement released by the Lagos and Ogun State Governments confirmed that Anthony Joshua is currently in stable condition. He was evacuated to a specialized medical facility in Lagos for thorough clinical evaluation.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reached out to the champion via telephone to offer his condolences.

"This immense tragedy casts a deep shadow on this season," the President stated. "I sympathize with you and your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident."

Promoters and fellow athletes, including Jake Paul—whom Joshua defeated just ten days ago in Miami—have sent messages of support. Paul took to social media, stating, "Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ, and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident."

Investigation Ongoing

The Ogun State Police Command and the FRSC have launched a full investigation into the crash. The wreckage of the Lexus has been moved to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division as authorities look into the primary causes, cited as "excessive speed and wrongful overtaking."

Joshua was in Nigeria on a holiday visit to his ancestral home in Sagamu following his recent victory. What was meant to be a triumphant homecoming has now turned into a period of deep mourning for the loss of two men who were central to his life and career.
