Injury Update: Stanley Nwabali Set to Be Rested; Is This Francis Uzoho’s Chance to Reclaim the No. 1 Spot?

FEZ, Morocco – Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has dropped a major hint regarding a shake-up in the Nigerian goalpost ahead of today's final Group C clash against the Cranes of Uganda. With a spot in the Round of 16 already secured, the biggest talking point in camp is the fitness and availability of first-choice goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali.

The Nwabali Situation: Precaution or Pain?

During Nigeria’s intense 3-2 victory over Tunisia last Saturday, Nwabali was seen gesturing for medical attention late in the game. While defender Chidozie Awaziem initially downplayed the concerns as "smart game management," Coach Chelle provided a more sobering update during Monday’s pre-match press conference.

"Nwabali has a little pain in his knee and some issues with his ankle," Chelle revealed to journalists in Fes. Although the Malian tactician described the injuries as manageable, he emphasized that the team’s long-term health is the priority.

Given that Nwabali is also one yellow card away from a suspension, resting the Chippa United star appears to be a strategic masterstroke to ensure he is 100% ready for the knockout stages.

The Return of Francis Uzoho?

With Nwabali likely to watch from the sidelines, the spotlight shifts to Francis Uzoho. Since Nwabali’s heroic rise during the last AFCON, Uzoho has found himself in the unfamiliar role of a backup. However, today’s "dead-rubber" fixture presents the Omonia Nicosia shot-stopper with a golden opportunity.

Uzoho was the first player to arrive at the Super Eagles' Cairo camp earlier this month, signaling his hunger to reclaim a starting role. While he has faced criticism from fans in the past, his experience on the big stage remains undeniable.

Why Today Matters

If Uzoho starts against Uganda, it won’t just be about filling a gap. It will be a high-stakes audition. A clean sheet and a confident performance could:

• Silence the critics who questioned his inclusion in the 28-man squad.

• Provide healthy competition for Nwabali as the tournament enters the business end.

• Give Coach Chelle peace of mind knowing he has two capable hands ready for the Round of 16.

Expected Lineup Changes

Chelle has promised a "surprise" starting eleven, with several key players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman also expected to be rested to avoid suspension risks. This paves the way for a new-look defense that Uzoho will be expected to lead.

The Super Eagles kick off against Uganda at 5:00 PM (WAT) at the Stade de Fès. All eyes will be on the team sheet to see if the "Bobo" of Nigerian football officially makes his tournament debut.
