The Quest for Perfection
If Nigeria secures a win today, it will mark the first time since the 2021 edition that the Super Eagles have won all three of their group matches. A victory would also extend their current AFCON group-stage winning streak to five matches, a feat they haven't achieved since 2006.
Star forward Ademola Lookman, who has been the standout performer of the tournament with two goals and two assists so far, is expected to lead the line alongside Victor Osimhen. The duo has been responsible for the bulk of Nigeria's five goals, making the Super Eagles the most productive attacking side in the competition after two rounds.
Uganda’s Last Stand
While Nigeria plays for pride and placement, the stakes could not be higher for Uganda. The Cranes sit at the bottom of Group C with just one point, following a draw against Tanzania. For Paul Put’s side, the mission is simple: Win or go home.
History, surprisingly, favors the underdogs. In eight previous meetings across all competitions, Uganda has won four times compared to Nigeria’s two. Their only previous meeting in an AFCON tournament saw Uganda stun the Super Eagles 2-1 in the 1978 semi-finals.
Team News & Tactical Shifts
Coach Chelle has hinted at potential squad rotation to keep his key assets fresh for the knockout stages.
• Goalkeeping: Reports suggest Francis Uzoho could start today, giving Stanley Nwabali a rest after a high-intensity clash against Tunisia.
• Midfield: Wilfred Ndidi, fresh off scoring his first international goal, may be rested in favor of Raphael Onyedika.
• Uganda's Secret Weapon: All eyes will be on Uche Ikpeazu, who scored against Tanzania. The English-born striker, who has Nigerian heritage, will be looking to haunt his father’s homeland to keep Uganda’s AFCON dream alive.
