MARRAKECH, Morocco — The Palancas Negras of Angola and the Warriors of Zimbabwe played out an entertaining 1-1 draw on Friday at the Stade de Marrakech, leaving both sides still searching for their first win of the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025.
First Half Drama Angola started the more aggressive of the two sides and were rewarded in the 24th minute. Following a beautiful chipped pass from Tó Carneiro, striker Gelson Dala showed great composure to fire a right-footed shot into the bottom corner, beating the veteran Zimbabwean goalkeeper Washington Arubi.
Zimbabwe, however, refused to back down. As the first half moved into extended stoppage time, the Warriors capitalized on a swift counter-attack. In the 6th minute of added time, captain Knowledge Musona latched onto a pass from Bill Antonio to slot home the equalizer, sending both teams into the break level.
Second Half Stalemate The second half was a tactical affair with both teams creating half-chances. Angola dominated possession for long periods, with Fredy and Zito Luvumbo testing the Zimbabwean defense. On the other end, Zimbabwe remained dangerous on the break, nearly snatching a winner late in the game through substitute Tawanda Chirewa, whose effort was brilliantly saved by Hugo Marques.
The Standings The result leaves both teams on 1 point after two matches. With Egypt and South Africa leading the pack in Group B, Angola and Zimbabwe will now head into their final group matches on Monday needing victories to secure a spot in the Round of 16.
Angola is set to face Egypt in Agadir, while Zimbabwe will battle South Africa in Marrakech.
