SAGAMU, OGUN STATE – The governments of Lagos and Ogun States have issued a joint press release to provide an official update on the health and stability of world-renowned boxing champion Anthony Joshua, following a devastating road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, near the Makun axis in Sagamu, claimed the lives of two of Joshua’s closest associates and team members.
Official Confirmation of Stability
In a statement signed by representatives of both state governments, authorities confirmed that the former two-time unified heavyweight champion is in stable condition. Following the crash, Joshua was evacuated from the scene and transferred to a specialized medical facility in Lagos for advanced care.
"Following comprehensive clinical assessments, doctors have confirmed that Anthony Joshua is conscious, stable, and does not require emergency surgical intervention at this time," the statement read. "He has been in communication with his family and is currently under the observation of a top-tier medical team."
The Details of the Crash
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the accident involved a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and three others. The vehicle reportedly lost control during an overtaking maneuver at high speed, crashing into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.
Tragically, the crash resulted in the immediate death of two passengers:
• Sina Ghami: Joshua's longtime strength and conditioning coach.
• Latif "Latz" Ayodele: Joshua's close friend and personal trainer.
The Ogun State Government, led by Governor Dapo Abiodun, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of life, describing the victims as integral to Joshua’s career and success. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State joined in the visit to the hospital, ensuring that the boxer receives the best possible medical attention.
National Sympathy
The news has sent shockwaves through the sporting world, coming just ten days after Joshua’s dominant knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has sent his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery, calling the incident a "devastating loss for the nation."
