MAKUN, Ogun State – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has released a preliminary report following the tragic road accident involving world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
According to the official statement from the Ogun State Sector Command, the fatal crash, which occurred on Monday, December 29, 2025, resulted from a combination of excessive speed and wrongful overtaking.
Details of the Incident
The accident took place at approximately 11:00 AM in the Makun axis, near the Sagamu Interchange. A black Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN, carrying the 36-year-old boxer and three other passengers, reportedly lost control while attempting a high-speed maneuver. The vehicle rammed into a stationary red Sinotruck parked by the side of the road.
The FRSC report noted:
"Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary
truck."
Casualties and Injuries
Tragically, the FRSC confirmed that two male foreign nationals, identified as close associates of Joshua, died on the spot. Their remains have been deposited at the Livewell Hospital Morgue in Sagamu.
Anthony Joshua, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, was rescued alive. While footage from the scene showed the boxer appearing shaken and in visible pain, authorities confirmed he sustained only minor injuries. He was promptly evacuated by his security detail to a specialized medical facility in Lagos, where he is currently in stable condition.
Official Reactions
The FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery. He used the medium to reiterate the corps' warning against dangerous driving, especially during the festive period.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also expressed his sympathies via a statement on X (formerly Twitter), describing the incident as a "tragic loss that has cast a shadow over the season."
Investigations Ongoing
The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD) has taken over the wreckage for further documentation. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine if mechanical failure, such as a burst tire, contributed to the driver losing control at such a high velocity.
Anthony Joshua had recently arrived in Nigeria for the holidays following his sixth-round knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami just nine days ago.
