PSG Stage Stunning Comeback to Win UEFA Super Cup in Penalty Shootout

Paris Saint-Germain have clinched their first-ever UEFA Super Cup title in dramatic fashion, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 on penalties after a thrilling 2-2 draw in Udine, Italy. The victory marks a remarkable start to the season for the Champions League holders, who mounted a stunning late comeback to snatch the trophy from the Europa League champions.

Tottenham, playing their first competitive match under new manager Thomas Frank, appeared to be in control for much of the game. They took a two-goal lead through defenders Micky van de Ven in the 39th minute and new captain Cristian Romero just after halftime. The English side looked sharper and more prepared, benefiting from a longer pre-season compared to PSG, who were recently involved in the FIFA Club World Cup.

However, PSG's resilience and quality shone through in the closing stages. Substitute Lee Kang-in pulled a goal back in the 85th minute with a powerful strike from the edge of the box. The comeback was completed in the fourth minute of stoppage time when another substitute, Gonçalo Ramos, headed home a cross from Ousmane Dembélé to force a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, PSG's goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, who was starting in place of the departing Gianluigi Donnarumma, made a crucial save. Despite an early miss from PSG's Vitinha, Tottenham's Van de Ven and Mathys Tel failed to convert their penalties, allowing Nuno Mendes to step up and secure the winning spot-kick for the French giants.

The win adds a fifth trophy to PSG's incredible haul in 2025 and marks the first time a French club has ever won the Super Cup. While Tottenham will be disappointed to have let a two-goal lead slip, their performance against one of Europe's top teams will offer plenty of positives for new boss Thomas Frank as they look ahead to the new Premier League season.
