Historic Win for Kenya in CHAN 2024 Opener

Kenya's CHAN Team kicked off their TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 campaign with a historic 1-0 victory over two-time champions DR Congo at a packed Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The win marks Kenya's first-ever victory in the CHAN tournament finals.

The decisive moment came in first-half stoppage time when midfielder Austin Odhiambo weaved past two defenders before calmly slotting a left-footed strike past the advancing DR Congo goalkeeper. The goal, which sent the home crowd into a frenzy, proved to be the match-winner in a tightly contested Group A opener.

DR Congo, who had a goal disallowed early on, pushed for an equalizer throughout the second half but were unable to break down a resolute Kenyan defense. The result gives Kenya a crucial early advantage in a challenging group that also includes Morocco and Angola.

Harambee Stars' coach Benni McCarthy praised his team's bravery and composure, highlighting Odhiambo's match-winning performance. This historic win provides a massive boost for the debutants as they look to build on this momentum in their next match against Angola.
