Zambia 🇿🇲 vs Morocco 🇲🇦: Rivalry Renewed on the Big Stage
Although this marks the first-ever WAFCON meeting between Zambia and Morocco, recent history has built a competitive rivalry between the two sides. They’ve clashed five times since 2022, with Zambia slightly edging the head-to-head encounters.
Their most recent meeting came in April 2024 during the CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifiers. Morocco took a 2–1 lead in the first leg in Ndola, but the Copper Queens bounced back with a resounding 2–0 away win in Rabat, booking their spot at the Paris 2024 Olympics on aggregate.
In September 2023, Zambia dominated two friendly matches, winning 2–0 and 6–2, while their first draw came in 2022—a 1–1 result at the same Rabat venue during WAFCON preparations.
Spotlight on the Stars
Zambia arrive in Morocco under the guidance of Swiss tactician Nora Häuptle, with high hopes pinned on their top talents. Leading the charge is Barbra Banda, the reigning CAF African Women’s Player of the Year, alongside returning striker Racheal Kundananji, who last featured in WAFCON back in 2018.
Morocco, coached by former Spain boss Jorge Vilda, are equally ambitious. After finishing as WAFCON 2022 runners-up and making waves on the global stage, the Atlas Lionesses will be looking to use home ground advantage to launch another deep run in the tournament.
WAFCON Records & Group A Outlook
This will be Zambia’s fourth WAFCON appearance, having previously featured in 2014, 2018, and 2022. Their opening match record includes one win, one draw, and one loss—the sole defeat coming in 2014 against Namibia.
Group A also features Senegal and DR Congo, who face off on Sunday, making Saturday’s opener crucial for both Zambia and Morocco to gain early control in the group standings.
