Super Falcons Leave It Late to Beat Botswana, Seal WAFCON Quarter-Final Spot

The Nigeria Super Falcons secured their place in the quarter-finals of the 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a narrow but crucial 1-0 victory over Botswana on Matchday 2 of Group B.

After a tense and cagey affair in Casablanca, it was Chinwendu Ihezuo who finally broke the deadlock in the 89th minute, heading home confidently from a pinpoint cross by Esther Okoronkwo. The goal came just in time to deny Botswana a share of the spoils and reward Nigeria’s relentless push in the final third.

Despite Botswana’s disciplined defending and resilient display, the Super Falcons kept their composure, showing patience and quality when it mattered most.

The win takes Nigeria to six points from two games, making them the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals of this year’s tournament. Following a 3-0 victory over Tunisia in their opener, the Falcons are yet to concede a goal, underlining their defensive strength and title credentials.

However, the group stage isn’t over yet. The Falcons will wrap up Group B action against Algeria on Sunday, July 13, aiming to finish top of the group and carry their unbeaten momentum into the knockout phase.

With two wins, two clean sheets, and a quarter-final ticket already secured, Nigeria are looking every bit like the title favorites once again.
