"From the very beginning, my goal was clear — to serve the game with integrity and represent my country, my community, and my family on the biggest stages of football," she wrote.
Akhona credits her late grandfather for instilling in her the values that have become the cornerstone of her career — discipline, honesty, respect, and integrity. These principles, she said, have seen her through every challenge and triumph on her journey.
She used the occasion to send a powerful message to young girls across Africa:
“To every young girl in South Africa, across Africa, and beyond — THIS IS FOR YOU. Let my journey be a reminder that with faith, strength, courage, and resilience, your dreams are valid… Even if support is scarce, even if the road is hard, keep pushing. You are capable of achieving greatness.”
