Copper Princesses Crowned COSAFA U17 Champions Once Again

The Zambia U17 Women’s National Team has once again proven their dominance in Southern African football, clinching the 2025 COSAFA Girls’ Championship title after a convincing 3-0 victory over Malawi in the final. The match, held at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek, Namibia, on Saturday, showcased the Copper Princesses’ attacking prowess and solid defensive performance.

A Commanding Display

Captain Ruth Mukoma led by example, opening the scoring in the 24th minute following a clever assist from Hellen Misozi Banda. Just three minutes later, Mukoma switched roles, setting up Natasha Kasema to double Zambia’s advantage with a composed strike. Just before halftime, Gift Mazimba Chisha made it 3-0, capitalizing on a rebound from Grace Phiri’s shot to seal the game before the break.

The second half saw Zambia maintain their dominance, with the team expertly managing the game and creating further chances through Banda and Kasema. Despite their efforts to increase the lead, the score remained 3-0, confirming Zambia's third COSAFA U17 title.

Individual Brilliance

Captain Ruth Mukoma was named Player of the Tournament, adding her name to the list of distinguished players who have led the Copper Princesses to glory. Goalkeeper Bukata Kakumbi also received accolades, being named Goalkeeper of the Tournament after conceding only once in four matches. Meanwhile, the Golden Boot went to Namibian striker Nancy Lebang, who scored seven goals throughout the competition. The Fair Play Award was given to Malawi, the tournament's runners-up.

A Legacy of Success

This triumph marks Zambia’s third COSAFA U17 Girls’ Championship title, following victories in 2021 (4-0 over Botswana in Maseru) and 2024 (15-0 over Lesotho in Johannesburg). The Copper Princesses finished the 2025 tournament with an impressive record of 21 goals scored and just one conceded.

In a display of true sportsmanship, Mozambique, who secured the bronze medal, gave Zambia a guard of honour as the champions approached the podium to receive their medals and trophy.

Looking Ahead

With the COSAFA title secured, the Copper Princesses now turn their focus to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, scheduled from 17 October to 8 November 2025. Zambia will represent Africa alongside hosts Morocco, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, and Nigeria.

Zambia’s success in the COSAFA U17 Championship reaffirms their position as one of Africa’s most promising young women’s teams. As they prepare for the global stage, the Copper Princesses are poised to make their mark at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
