Morocco to Destroy Super Eagles Record of 28 Years

By Olamide Oyetunji - The tremendous exploits of the Atlas Lions of Morocco at the ongoing FIFA World Cup could become something to cherish for the whole of Africa not only now but in years to come.

Coach Walid Regragui’s Atlas Lions have humbled three European Giants enroute Africa’s first FIFA WorldCup Semifinal.

They defeated second ranked Belgium during the group stage, seventh ranked Spanish team were eliminated in the round of 16 while Portugal who are ninth on FIFA global ranking suffered a shocking 0-1 defeat in the round of 8.

Conceded one goal in five games and own-goal against Canada for that matter, Morocco have the best defence in the last four and will it all to do against the current World Champions France.

Morocco were ranked Number 22nd on the FIFA World ranking by the start of the World Cup and their fortunes is expected to change at the end of the competition.

A top ten ranking will be more than deserved but could they become the highest ranked African team in history?

In April 1994, the Nigerian national football team was ranked 5th in the FIFA rankings, the highest FIFA ranking position ever achieved by an African football team. Throughout history, the team has qualified for six of the last eight FIFA World Cups, missing only the 2006 edition and 2022 edition.
