RUFC Media | 28th February 2021
WHAT HAPPENED
Rivers United made an unhappy return to the 'Land of promise' on Sunday, as Akwa United claimed a 3-0 victory at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Mfon Udoh's first half goal and two second half goals by Charles Atshimene and Morice Chukwu ensured the "Pride of Rivers" suffered back-to-back defeat for the first time this season.
Rivers United dominated the opening minutes of the encounter with Godwin Aguda, Stephen Gopey and Fortune Omoniwari leading the charge before the host has their first real attempt at goal in the 22nd minutes when Charles Atshimene shot went off target.
Theophilus Afelokai was soon at the heart of the action as Akwa United took control, making two excellent saves in quick succession to deny Ndifreke Effiong and Charles Atshimene.
But the "Pride of Rivers" safe hands could do nothing when just before half time, Mfon Udoh score his third goal of the season firing a powerful left-footed strike into the bottom left corner of the post to ensure the host went into the break in front.
Things went from bad to worse after the restart when Charles Atshimene benefitted from some mix up at the back to score the second for the host and his third goal of the season.
Akwa United added a third in 89th minute when Morice Chukwu slammed in a well taken free kick it into the roof of the net from just outside the goal area, and it capped off a disappointing evening in Uyo.
