He was born in Dublin, Ireland to Nigerian parents. He played for Republic of Ireland National Team at the age grade level and currently plays for their senior team. He could have also chosen to represent Nigeria but prefers to play for the Republic of Ireland.
Michael's parents moved to England and he was raised in London.
The forward has an older brother who is also a professional footballer, Afolabi Obafemi by name.
