Benni McCarthy Named Cape Town City Coach

South African club Cape Town City officially unveiled Benni McCarthy as the new head coach of the Mother City-based club following Eric Tinkler’s departure
Bafana Bafana’s record goalscorer was on Tuesday unveiled as the Citizens’ new coach, City chairman John Comitis made the announcement at a press conference held on Tuesday, confirming that McCarthy has signed a three-year deal. Following the departure of Eric Tinkler to SuperSport United the Citizens moved quickly to secure a new man for the role of head coach.
Switftly installing McCarthy as head coach gives the former Bafana Bafana hitman an opportunity to thoroughly prepare for the upcoming 2017/18 campaign. As well as being the national team's all-time leading goalscorer, the 39-year-old enjoyed a lengthy career overseas playing for European heavyweights Ajax Amsterdam and FC Porto as well as English outfit Blackburn Rovers.

McCarthy has a UEFA A coaching license and has previously spent time in the dugout as an assistant coach with the Belgian outfit Sint-Truiden VV. Meanwhile,Cape Town City boss John Comitis feels he has found the perfect coach in Benni McCarthy, likening the former South African international to Zinedine Zidane.

“Cape Town City football club is extremely ambitious, it represents the entire city across all borders and I couldn’t have fit a better fit than getting Benni McCarthy himself to take us to the next stage and to the next level,” Comitis revealed in a press-conference today.

Benni McCarthy’s history is well documented but for those who know and have been around as long as I am, his first ever game in the PSL was for Cape Town Spurs when I was the chairman and I remember him as a 17-year-old, he then left us very quickly and graced the pitches of Europe in excess of a decade. “For him to be back here today is very significant for us as a club because I think what he saw, is something real and something that can change the lives of Capetonians and set a legacy for the years to come.

So, the typical word, he ticks all the boxes and I think Benni McCarthy is the right guy for the job and I think after I spent ten minutes with him and I understood the levels (to) which he feels the game, the level at which he understands the flavor in the change-rooms, you cannot replace that. “I look at what Real Madrid did, they took a leap of faith in Zidane and that gave me more reason to believe that I have made the absolutely perfect decision for this club. Benni, welcome home,” he concluded.
