Zverev hailed by Henman and Noah after securing historic year-end world No. 1 ranking

Shanghai, China — Alexander Zverev has received praise from tennis figures Tim Henman and Yannick Noah after securing the 2026 ATP year-end world No. 1 honour, capping a landmark season for the German following his maiden Grand Slam triumphs at the French Open and US Open.

The 29-year-old became the first German player to finish a season at the top of the ATP rankings after Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock defeat to Belgium’s Zizou Bergs at the Shanghai Masters on Monday, 12 October.

Zverev’s achievement was confirmed despite his current position at No. 2 in the live rankings. The German is mathematically assured of finishing the season at the summit and is set to overtake Jannik Sinner in the official rankings before the campaign concludes.

Henman and Noah praise Zverev’s achievement

Former British player Tim Henman and French tennis great Yannick Noah were among the figures to acknowledge Zverev’s accomplishment, which marks a significant milestone in his career.

Henman, a former world No. 4 and Team Europe vice-captain at the Laver Cup, has long been involved in tennis as a commentator and analyst. Noah, the former French Open champion, has also served as Team Europe captain at the Laver Cup.

Their recognition reflects the significance of Zverev’s breakthrough season, in which he has moved beyond his previous reputation as a leading player still seeking a Grand Slam title.

Grand Slam success transforms Zverev’s season

Zverev’s rise to the year-end summit has been built on a remarkable run of results in 2026.

The German claimed his first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros before adding the US Open crown, becoming one of the season’s most successful players.

He also reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and the final at Wimbledon, underlining his consistency across all four major championships.

His season has been further strengthened by a high number of match victories and his ability to deliver in the biggest tournaments.

Alcaraz’s Shanghai exit settles the race

The year-end No. 1 race was settled when Alcaraz, the world No. 2 at the time, was beaten by unseeded Belgian Zizou Bergs in the Shanghai Masters round of 32.

Bergs won 7–5, 7–6(4), recording one of the biggest victories of his career and ending Alcaraz’s hopes of keeping the race open.

Sinner’s season-ending injury had already weakened the Italian’s chances of retaining the year-end honour. With Alcaraz eliminated, Zverev became mathematically certain to finish the season on top.

A historic milestone for German tennis

Zverev’s achievement makes him the first German man to secure the ATP year-end No. 1 distinction.

At 29, he is also set to become the oldest player to claim the honour for the first time, surpassing the age at which Andre Agassi first finished a season as world No. 1 in 1999.

The milestone represents a major personal achievement for Zverev, who endured a serious ankle injury in 2022 and worked his way back to the top level of the sport.

Having now combined Grand Slam success with the year-end ranking distinction, the German has completed one of the most significant seasons of his professional career.

Zverev targets a strong finish to 2026

Although the year-end ranking race has been decided, Zverev still has opportunities to add to his achievements before the season concludes.

The German will look to maintain his form in the remaining tournaments, with the ATP Finals among the major events still to come.

For Zverev, the year-end No. 1 honour confirms his place at the top of men’s tennis in 2026 and provides a fitting reward for a season in which he captured two of the sport’s biggest prizes.
