Basel, Switzerland — Holger Rune’s run at the 2026 Swiss Indoors Basel came to an end on Friday, 30 October, after Valentin Vacherot defeated the Dane 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in a closely contested quarter-final.
Vacherot, representing Monaco, recovered after losing the second set to secure his place in the last four of the ATP 500 tournament. The victory also continued his impressive run in Basel, where he had to withstand a determined challenge from the returning Rune.
Vacherot takes control of the opening set
Rune started aggressively, moving Vacherot around the court and putting pressure on his opponent’s serve. The Dane earned several break-point opportunities in the opening games, but Vacherot held firm with powerful serving.
Rune’s inability to convert those chances proved costly. Vacherot eventually broke the Dane’s serve and moved ahead, while Rune also required treatment on his thigh when trailing 2-5.
The Monegasque maintained his advantage to close out the first set 6-3.
Rune fights back to level the match
Rune responded strongly in the second set, raising his level and putting Vacherot under greater pressure.
The former world No. 4 secured an early break, including a love game on Vacherot’s serve, to establish a 2-0 lead. He maintained control through the set and eventually won it 6-3 to force a decider.
The comeback reflected Rune’s determination as he continues rebuilding his form following a lengthy Achilles tendon injury.
Vacherot settles the contest in the deciding set
The third set remained competitive, with both players working hard to protect their service games.
The decisive moment came when Vacherot broke Rune to take a 4-2 lead. He then held his advantage, using his powerful serve to prevent the Dane from mounting another comeback.
Vacherot closed out the set 6-3 to complete a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 victory and book his place in the semi-finals.
His serving was a major factor in the result, as he produced 20 aces during the match.
Rune’s Basel comeback ends
Although Rune leaves Basel disappointed, the tournament provided encouraging signs in his return to competitive tennis.
The 23-year-old had returned to the ATP Tour approximately six weeks earlier after a lengthy absence caused by an Achilles tendon injury. His victories over Hubert Hurkacz and Quentin Halys in Basel represented his first wins since returning.
However, Vacherot proved too strong in the quarter-final, ending Rune’s hopes of progressing further.
Vacherot advances to the semi-finals
Vacherot will face either Taylor Fritz or Arthur Fils in the semi-finals on Saturday as he continues his campaign at the Swiss Indoors Basel.
For Rune, attention now turns to maintaining his recovery and building on the progress made during his first tournament victories since returning from injury.
