Ikenne-Remo, Nigeria: Nigeria’s Super Falcons begin their quest for qualification for the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games when they face Comoros in the first leg of their second-round African qualifying tie on Friday, 9 October.
The encounter will take place at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, Ogun State, with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Nigerian time. Although Comoros are the designated home team, the fixture is being played in Nigeria because the island nation does not have a suitable CAF-approved stadium.
The two teams will meet again at the same venue on Tuesday, 13 October, with the aggregate score determining which side advances to the third qualifying round.
Match details
Super Falcons target strong start under Eguavoen
Nigeria enter the qualifying tie under interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen, who has expressed confidence in the team's ability to progress despite the absence of several established players.
The Super Falcons received a bye into the second round because of their position among Africa's highest-ranked women's national teams. They will now seek to make that advantage count against a Comoros side that has already demonstrated its attacking ability.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade is expected to lead Nigeria's challenge, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Alozie, Toni Payne, Jennifer Echegini, Christy Ucheibe, Gift Monday and Uchenna Kanu among the experienced players available.
However, Nigeria have had to adjust their plans following the withdrawals of Asisat Oshoala, Ashley Plumptre and Oluwatosin Demehin, among others.
Eguavoen has backed the available players to step up, insisting that the withdrawals will not prevent the team from producing competitive performances across the two legs.
Comoros arrive after 30-goal qualifying triumph
Comoros progressed to the second round after recording an emphatic 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan in the opening round.
They won the first leg 17-0 before completing the tie with a 13-0 victory in the return fixture.
Those results will give the Comorans confidence, although facing Nigeria represents a substantially greater test against one of Africa's most established women's football teams.
Playing both legs in Nigeria also means Comoros will not have the conventional advantage of hosting the opening match on home soil.
Nevertheless, the Super Falcons will need to remain disciplined and avoid underestimating their opponents as they pursue a place in the next round.
Head-to-head record: Nigeria vs Comoros
There is no established senior women's international head-to-head record between Nigeria and Comoros that provides a meaningful basis for comparing the two teams.
The October qualifying fixtures therefore represent an important opportunity for both nations to establish their competitive history against each other.
Nigeria's record of success in African women's football gives the Super Falcons considerable experience to draw upon, but the outcome will ultimately depend on their performances over the two matches.
Road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics
The African qualifying competition consists of five rounds, with the successful teams progressing through a demanding route towards the Olympic tournament.
Nigeria are seeking a second consecutive appearance at the Women's Olympic Football Tournament after competing at Paris 2024.
Winning the tie on aggregate would send the Super Falcons into the third round, scheduled for March 2027, where they would face either Morocco or the Democratic Republic of Congo.
With qualification still several rounds away, the immediate priority is to secure a positive result against Comoros and put themselves in a strong position before the return leg.
What to expect
Nigeria will look to use their international experience, squad depth and attacking quality to control the encounter. Comoros, meanwhile, will aim to build on their impressive opening-round results and make the most of their opportunity against the African heavyweights.
A strong first-leg performance would give the Super Falcons a valuable platform for Tuesday's return fixture and move them closer to their ambition of returning to the Olympic Games.
