Sporting CP punish RC Lens as Luis Suárez and Issa Doumbia secure Champions League victory

Lens, France — RC Lens suffered a 2–0 home defeat to Sporting CP in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, after the Portuguese visitors capitalised on their opportunities to claim all three points.

Despite an energetic start and several promising attacking moves, Lens struggled to find the finishing touch against a disciplined Sporting side. Luis Suárez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute before Issa Doumbia doubled the visitors’ advantage in the 75th minute.

Suárez strikes against the run of play

Lens began the encounter with confidence, pushing forward in front of their home supporters at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis. Captain Florian Thauvin tested the Sporting defence with early efforts, but the hosts were unable to turn their promising start into a goal.

Sporting gradually settled into the contest and punished Lens in the 22nd minute. Luis Suárez finished a move initiated by João Simões and assisted by Nestory Irankunda to give the visitors the lead.

Lens responded by increasing the pressure. Amadou Haidara and Franjo Ivanović both threatened, with Ivanović striking the crossbar in the 34th minute. Sporting goalkeeper Kaique Pereira also produced important interventions to preserve his side’s advantage.

The hosts continued searching for an equaliser, but Sporting went into the interval leading 1–0.

Sporting withstands Lens pressure

The second half continued with chances at both ends. Haidara forced Kaique Pereira into a fine save around the hour mark, while Robin Risser kept Lens in contention with a stop against Suárez.

Substitute Odsonne Édouard also came close to restoring parity, testing the Sporting goalkeeper shortly after entering the game.

However, Sporting remained dangerous on the counterattack and delivered the decisive blow in the 75th minute. Issa Doumbia finished a move involving substitute Jesse Derry to make it 2–0 and put the visitors firmly in control.

Lens attempted to respond through Thauvin and Ismaelo Ganiou late in the match, but Sporting held firm to secure the victory.

What the result means

The defeat denied Lens the opportunity to record a second consecutive European victory. Sporting, meanwhile, strengthened their position in the Champions League league phase after another productive performance away from home.

Lens will need to improve their finishing and make better use of their attacking pressure as they turn their attention to their next domestic fixture before returning to European action.
