Sonay Kartal and Maja Chwalińska prepare for unexpected Wuhan Open final

Wuhan, China — Sonay Kartal and Maja Chwalińska will compete for the biggest titles of their careers when they meet in the final of the 2026 Wuhan Open on Sunday, following a remarkable week of upsets at the WTA 1000 tournament.

Britain’s Kartal booked her place in the final with a straight-sets victory over Jelena Ostapenko, while Poland’s Chwalińska produced one of the tournament’s biggest surprises by defeating six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Świątek.

The final is an unusual one for a tournament of Wuhan’s stature, with Chwalińska ranked world number 22 and Kartal at number 170. It guarantees a new champion at the prestigious event.

Kartal overcomes Ostapenko in two tense tie-breaks

Kartal demonstrated remarkable composure to defeat former French Open champion Ostapenko 7–6(9), 7–6(5) in Saturday’s semi-final.

The British player had to fight back from a 4–1 deficit in both sets, surviving difficult moments against an opponent known for her aggressive groundstrokes and powerful shot-making.

Ostapenko struggled to maintain consistency, finishing with 41 unforced errors. Kartal took advantage of those mistakes, remaining patient during the rallies and holding her nerve when the sets went to tie-breaks.

The victory secured Kartal’s second career final and her first at WTA 1000 level.

Her run in Wuhan has been particularly impressive because she returned to competition in September following a six-month absence caused by a back injury.

Before reaching the final, Kartal also defeated Belinda Bencic, Jasmine Paolini and Elina Svitolina, underlining the quality of her performances throughout the tournament.

Chwalińska stuns Świątek to reach the final

Chwalińska secured her place in the championship match with a 7–5, 6–1 victory over compatriot Świątek in an all-Polish semi-final.

The match initially appeared to be going Świątek’s way, with the former world number one leading 5–3 in the opening set. However, Chwalińska saved two set points, turned the momentum around and won four consecutive games to take the set.

Świątek then required medical attention for a left-leg injury. Although she continued playing with her thigh bandaged, her movement was visibly affected as Chwalińska took control of the contest.

The 25-year-old completed the victory by winning 10 of the final 11 games, reaching her first WTA 1000 final in the process.

Chwalińska has enjoyed a remarkable season, having reached the French Open final earlier in the year. Her performance in Wuhan represents another major milestone after a difficult period in which she struggled to reproduce her best form consistently.

A final neither player expected

The Wuhan final represents an opportunity for both players to achieve a significant career breakthrough.

Kartal is seeking her second WTA Tour title after winning the WTA 250 tournament in Monastir in 2024. A victory in China would be the most important title of her career and a remarkable reward for her return from injury.

Chwalińska, meanwhile, is chasing her first WTA Tour title. Having already reached a Grand Slam final this season, she has demonstrated that she can compete on major stages, and another strong performance would further establish her as a player to watch.

The final will also be their first professional meeting, meaning neither player has a previous head-to-head advantage.

Kartal’s resilience faces Chwalińska’s momentum

Kartal’s route to the final has been built on resilience, tactical discipline and an ability to remain calm against higher-ranked opponents.

Her victories over several top-50 players suggest that her ranking does not reflect the level she has reached during this tournament. If she can maintain the consistency she showed against Ostapenko, she will have a genuine opportunity to claim the title.

Chwalińska, however, enters the final after an emphatic victory over one of the biggest names in women's tennis. Her confidence will be high, although the physical demands of her semi-final and the pressure of a first WTA 1000 final could prove significant factors.

Both players have already exceeded expectations in Wuhan. The final will determine which of them can take the final step and turn an extraordinary tournament run into the biggest title of her career.
