Skanderborg AGF stun Montpellier again with eight-goal Champions League victory

Montpellier — Skanderborg AGF produced another outstanding performance to defeat Montpellier 38–30 away from home in the EHF Champions League on Thursday, 15 October 2026, completing a second victory over the French side in the space of a week.

The Danish club’s eight-goal triumph was a major upset against the two-time Champions League winners, who struggled to contain Skanderborg AGF’s attacking play throughout the encounter.

After winning the first meeting 36–32 in Denmark on 8 October, Skanderborg AGF repeated the achievement on French soil, strengthening their position in the race for qualification from Group E.

Seven-against-six attack turns the match

Montpellier started strongly and took an early lead, but the contest changed after approximately 15 minutes when Skanderborg AGF introduced a seven-against-six attacking strategy.

The tactical adjustment created additional space and passing options for the visitors, who began finding gaps in Montpellier’s defence and converting their opportunities.

Johan Hansen was particularly effective, scoring with all four of his attempts against Montpellier goalkeeper Rémi Desbonnet.

Skanderborg AGF took a four-goal advantage into half-time, leaving the home side with significant work to do after the interval.

Magnus Petersen inspires Danish dominance

Skanderborg AGF maintained their intensity after the restart, combining efficient attacking play with important saves from goalkeeper Magnus Petersen.

Montpellier struggled to disrupt the visitors’ rhythm and were unable to close the gap despite occasionally scoring into an empty net when Skanderborg AGF committed extra players to attack.

The Danish side continued to extend their advantage, with three consecutive goals increasing the margin to seven.

Kristján Kristjánsson then scored to make it 31–22, effectively ending Montpellier’s hopes of mounting a comeback.

Petersen’s goalkeeping performance further strengthened the visitors’ control as they completed a convincing eight-goal victory.

Barcelona lead as Skanderborg strengthen second place

The victory puts Skanderborg AGF in a strong position in Group E, with the Danish side occupying second place on five points after four rounds.

Barcelona lead the group with eight points from four matches, while Skanderborg AGF have two remaining opportunities to secure their progress to the main round.

The competition’s group format means the Danish side will be targeting further points in their final two matches to confirm qualification.

For Montpellier, the consecutive defeats against Skanderborg AGF represent a disappointing sequence after entering the first encounter as favourites.

A landmark European campaign for Skanderborg AGF

Skanderborg AGF have demonstrated that they can compete against established European opposition, first by recording their maiden Champions League victory against Montpellier and then by following it with an even more emphatic away win.

The back-to-back results underline the effectiveness of their attacking system and the importance of Petersen’s contribution in goal.

With qualification now within reach, the Danish club will aim to maintain their momentum in the remaining group fixtures.

Montpellier, meanwhile, must respond quickly if they are to recover from the double setback and strengthen their own position in the competition.
