Aarhus, Denmark — Skanderborg AGF claimed their first-ever victory in the EHF Champions League after defeating French outfit Montpellier 36–32 in Group E on Thursday, 8 October 2026.
The Danish side produced a determined performance on home court to overcome an early attacking struggle and withstand Montpellier’s second-half fightback, earning a landmark result in their European campaign.
The victory also strengthened Skanderborg AGF’s position in the group, with the club sitting second halfway through the six-match group stage.
Skanderborg AGF recover from difficult start
The hosts initially struggled to find their rhythm in attack, allowing Montpellier to capitalise on technical errors and launch dangerous counter-attacks.
However, Skanderborg AGF gradually settled into the contest and reduced their mistakes. Two suspensions for Montpellier also helped the Danish side regain momentum.
The hosts eventually moved ahead and carried a 15–13 lead into half-time, putting themselves in a strong position to secure their first Champions League win.
Cieslak helps extend Danish advantage
Skanderborg AGF resumed the second half with confidence, and Jeppe Cieslak raced away on a fast break to increase the advantage to 18–14 less than five minutes after the restart.
The goal forced Montpellier to call a timeout as the visitors attempted to halt the hosts’ momentum.
Montpellier responded by tightening their defence and punishing mistakes from the Danish side. The French team scored four unanswered goals to erase the deficit and bring the contest back into balance.
Kristjansson and Petersen prove decisive
Skanderborg AGF refused to surrender their advantage despite Montpellier’s resurgence.
Kristjan Kristjansson found his scoring touch at a crucial stage, producing important goals to help the hosts regain control of the match.
At the other end, goalkeeper Magnus Petersen delivered an outstanding performance, making a series of important saves to frustrate Montpellier’s attack.
Kristjansson’s curling finish extended the Danish side’s lead to 35–32, leaving them within touching distance of a historic victory. Petersen then completed his impressive display with his 20th save of the evening.
Skanderborg AGF ultimately secured a four-goal win, sealing a 36–32 result that will be remembered as a significant milestone in the club’s European history.
Victory strengthens Champions League campaign
The result leaves Skanderborg AGF second in Group E after three matches, putting them in a promising position as they pursue qualification for the main round.
Defending champions Barcelona remain among the leading sides in the group, while Skanderborg AGF will look to build on their breakthrough victory in the remaining fixtures.
For Montpellier, the defeat represents a missed opportunity to take points away from Denmark, particularly after their successful response early in the second half.
Skanderborg AGF will now aim to carry the confidence from their historic win into their next European assignment as the battle for progression intensifies.
