Simba stun Yanga with dramatic comeback to win Kariakoo Derby

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — Simba SC came from behind to defeat arch-rivals Young Africans SC (Yanga) 2–1 in a thrilling Kariakoo Derby on Saturday, ending their long wait for a Mainland Premier League victory over their rivals.

Yanga took an early lead through Peter Shalulile, but second-half goals from Neo Maema and Elie Mpanzu completed a superb turnaround for Simba at Uhuru Stadium.

The victory extended Simba’s perfect start to the 2026/27 NBC Premier League season to seven consecutive wins and moved them three points clear of defending champions Yanga.

Shalulile gives Yanga early advantage

Yanga made a bright start and took the lead in the fifth minute when Namibian striker Shalulile finished a move created by Maxi Mpia Nzengeli.

The early breakthrough gave the defending champions control of the contest, and they held their 1–0 advantage until half-time despite Simba’s attempts to respond.

Yanga appeared on course to maintain their unbeaten league record, but Simba returned after the interval with greater attacking intent.

Maema and Mpanzu complete Simba comeback

Simba increased the pressure after the restart and found their equaliser in the 68th minute. Neo Maema finished a move created by Senegalese winger Libasse Gueye to bring the hosts level.

The equaliser shifted momentum towards Simba, who continued to push forward in search of a winner.

Their persistence paid off three minutes later when Elie Mpanzu scored in the 71st minute to put Simba ahead for the first time. His finish completed the comeback and sparked celebrations among the home supporters.

Simba then managed the closing stages to secure all three points in one of Tanzania’s biggest football rivalries.

Simba end long wait for league derby victory

The result was particularly significant because it marked Simba’s first Mainland Premier League victory over Yanga since April 2023.

Simba had endured a lengthy winless run against their traditional rivals in league competition, making the comeback an important result for head coach Steve Barker and his squad.

Yanga had won the teams’ previous Community Shield meeting 1–0 in August, but Simba gained their response in the league encounter that mattered to the early title race.

Updated NBC Premier League standings

The victory took Simba to 21 points from seven matches, maintaining their 100 per cent league record and opening a three-point gap at the top of the table.

Yanga remain on 18 points after suffering their first league defeat of the campaign, having also won their opening six fixtures.

Although the season remains in its early stages, the result gives Simba an important advantage over the defending champions and adds fresh intensity to the title race.

For Yanga, the focus will now turn to recovering from their first setback and preventing their rivals from extending the gap.

Simba, meanwhile, will take confidence from a comeback victory that delivered derby bragging rights and strengthened their position in the NBC Premier League.
