Ouagadougou — Niger defeated Nigeria 2-1 in the 2027 Africa U17 Cup of Nations qualifying tournament on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, handing the Golden Eaglets an early setback in their quest to reach the continental finals.
Abdoul Razak gave Niger the lead in the 19th minute before Abdoul Rakilou scored eight minutes from time to put his team firmly in control. Nigeria pulled one back through Mubarak Fasiu in the fifth minute of stoppage time, but the late goal was not enough to prevent defeat.
The result was a significant boost for Niger, who followed their opening 1-1 draw against defending zonal champions Ivory Coast with a victory over one of Africa’s most successful youth football nations.
Niger take first-half advantage
Nigeria had an early opportunity to take the lead when Lawrence Abuchi threatened in the 15th minute, but his effort was diverted away from goal.
Niger capitalised four minutes later when Abdoul Razak found the net after exploiting a poorly positioned Nigerian defence.
The Golden Eaglets attempted to respond before half-time but could not find an equaliser, allowing Niger to take a 1-0 advantage into the break.
Rakilou delivers decisive second goal
Nigeria head coach Eboboritse Uwejamomere made changes after the interval in an attempt to revive his team's performance.
However, Niger remained organised and disciplined, frustrating the Nigerian attack before extending their lead in the 86th minute through Abdoul Rakilou.
The second goal left Nigeria facing a difficult task in the closing stages, with time running out to salvage a result.
Fasiu gave the Golden Eaglets renewed hope when he scored in the 90+5th minute, but Niger held on to claim all three points.

Nigeria are five-time FIFA U17 World Cup champions, but their latest defeat underlines the challenges facing the team in their attempt to return to the top level of youth international football.
The Golden Eaglets must now improve their attacking efficiency and defensive organisation ahead of their crucial encounter with Ivory Coast.
With qualification places at stake, their next match could prove decisive in determining whether Nigeria progress to the semi-finals or face an early exit from the zonal tournament.
