Milan, Italy — Inter Milan suffered a painful 4–3 defeat to Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, as Nicolò Tresoldi scored a stunning hat-trick to lead the Belgian visitors to victory at the San Siro.
Despite two goals from captain Lautaro Martínez and a late strike from Ange-Yoan Bonny, Inter could not prevent Club Brugge from claiming all three points in a seven-goal thriller.
Tresoldi scored from the penalty spot before adding two more goals after half-time, while Romeo Vermant struck late to restore Brugge’s two-goal advantage and leave Inter facing another difficult European night.
Tresoldi opens the scoring from the penalty spot
Inter began with attacking intent, with Lautaro Martínez and Marcus Thuram looking to trouble the Brugge defence. Former Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer, however, kept the hosts at bay during the opening exchanges.
The breakthrough came around the half-hour mark when Hakan Çalhanoğlu fouled Carlos Forbs inside the penalty area. Tresoldi stepped up and converted the resulting spot-kick to give Club Brugge the lead.
Inter responded before the interval. Thuram helped create the opportunity, and Federico Dimarco’s clever backheel set up Lautaro Martínez, who finished confidently to bring the hosts level.
The equaliser offered Inter a route back into the contest, but Brugge remained dangerous and continued to threaten whenever space opened up.
Goalkeeping error allows Brugge to regain the lead
Club Brugge moved ahead again shortly after the hour mark following a costly defensive misunderstanding by Inter.
A loose exchange involving goalkeeper Josep Martínez allowed Carlos Forbs to play the ball through, leaving Tresoldi with the simple task of finishing into an unguarded net.
The goal restored Brugge’s advantage and put Inter under renewed pressure. The visitors capitalised on their momentum, with Tresoldi completing his hat-trick in the 74th minute to make it 3–1.
The young forward’s third goal was particularly damaging for Inter, who were suddenly facing a two-goal deficit with time running out.
Lautaro revives Inter’s hopes
Inter refused to surrender and pushed forward in search of a response. Their captain delivered again in the 81st minute, scoring his second goal of the night to reduce the deficit to 3–2.
The goal reignited the San Siro crowd and gave the Italian side hope of rescuing a result. Inter increased the pressure, searching for an equaliser that would have transformed the contest.
However, Brugge punished the hosts’ attacking commitment in the 87th minute. Vermant found the net to make it 4–2, restoring the Belgian side’s two-goal cushion and placing them within reach of a memorable victory.
Bonny scores late but Brugge hold on
Inter continued to attack in stoppage time, and Bonny scored in the 93rd minute to make it 4–3.
The late strike gave the hosts a final opportunity to salvage a point, but Brugge survived the closing moments to secure a famous away victory.
For Inter, the defeat was particularly frustrating because their attacking quality produced three goals, yet defensive mistakes allowed Tresoldi and his teammates to make the difference.
Tresoldi steals the spotlight at the San Siro
Tresoldi was the outstanding performer, scoring all three of his goals for Club Brugge before Vermant delivered the decisive fourth.
Lautaro also made a significant contribution for Inter, scoring twice to keep his side in contention. Bonny’s late goal added further drama, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.
Brugge’s ability to exploit defensive errors proved decisive in a match where Inter had periods of attacking dominance but failed to maintain control at the back.
Inter face pressure to recover in Europe
The defeat left Inter with consecutive losses at the start of their Champions League campaign, following their 2–1 defeat away to Real Madrid in their opening league-phase fixture.
Inter will need to improve defensively and convert their attacking opportunities more efficiently as they prepare for their next European assignment against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Club Brugge, meanwhile, will take considerable confidence from their performance at the San Siro after bouncing back from their opening-match defeat to Aston Villa.
