Medvedev overcomes Paul to reach Shanghai Masters semi-finals and set up Jodar clash

Shanghai, China — Daniil Medvedev recovered from a second-set collapse to defeat Tommy Paul 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 on Friday, 16 October 2026, booking his place in the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters and setting up a meeting with Spanish rising star Rafael Jodar.

The fifth-seeded Russian delivered 16 aces and 31 winners to overcome the American in a contest lasting just over two hours. The victory marked the 70th tour-level semi-final of Medvedev’s career and strengthened his bid to qualify for the season-ending ATP Finals in Turin.

Medvedev, the 2019 Shanghai champion, remains the only former winner of the tournament still competing in this year’s draw.

Medvedev takes control in opening set

The Russian made a strong start against 15th seed Paul, using his powerful groundstrokes and deep returns to put pressure on the American’s service games.

Paul fought hard to stay in contention, but Medvedev held firm during a lengthy sixth game in which he saved seven break points.

The American eventually surrendered the decisive break after sending a shot long, allowing Medvedev to close out the opening set 6-3.

The Russian’s composure under pressure proved important, particularly as Paul continued to search for opportunities to disrupt his opponent’s rhythm.

Paul responds with dominant second set

Paul produced an impressive response in the second set, improving his defensive play and forcing Medvedev into uncomfortable positions from the baseline.

The American took advantage of a dip in Medvedev’s serving consistency, with the Russian committing two double faults in a crucial service game.

Paul capitalised on the opportunity to take control and raced through the set 6-1, forcing a deciding set and raising the prospect of another long battle in Shanghai.

Medvedev admitted afterwards that he had been below his best at times but praised his ability to recover and regain control when the match was on the line.

Russian regains momentum to seal victory

Medvedev started the deciding set with renewed focus, moving into a 2-0 lead and putting Paul under immediate pressure.

The Russian was more effective in the baseline exchanges and took advantage of a drop in the American’s level as the match progressed.

Paul struggled to maintain his first-serve percentage, while Medvedev continued to find ways to win important points.

The former world number one secured another break before serving out the set 6-3 to complete the victory.

The result improved Medvedev’s head-to-head record against Paul to five wins and one defeat.

Jodar sets up semi-final showdown after Ruud comeback

Medvedev will face Rafael Jodar in the semi-finals after the 20-year-old Spaniard defeated Norway’s Casper Ruud 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 earlier on Friday.

Jodar once again demonstrated his resilience, recovering from a set down for the fourth consecutive match in Shanghai. The 12th seed broke Ruud five times across the final two sets to secure a memorable victory.

The win made Jodar the youngest semi-finalist in Shanghai Masters history, continuing a breakthrough season that has seen him rise rapidly through the world rankings.

Jodar, who was ranked as low as 903 little more than a year ago, has established himself among the tournament’s leading contenders and will now face one of the most experienced players remaining in the draw.

Medvedev acknowledged the Spaniard’s quality ahead of their first meeting, saying he hits the ball strongly and that he was looking forward to experiencing his game in person.

Medvedev strengthens ATP Finals hopes

The Shanghai victory further improved Medvedev’s prospects of qualifying for the ATP Finals, where he was champion in 2021.

The Russian has enjoyed an impressive Asian swing, winning the title in Hangzhou last month and reaching the semi-finals in Beijing before advancing to the last four in Shanghai.

He will now aim to reach the final and move closer to another Masters 1000 title, having last won at that level in Rome in 2023.

The other Shanghai semi-final will feature top seed Alexander Zverev against Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

With the final weekend approaching, Medvedev’s experience and improving form make him a serious contender, but Jodar’s fearless run promises to provide a stern test.
