Mandalika, Indonesia — Marc Márquez moved to the top of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship standings after winning a chaotic sprint race at the Indonesian Grand Prix on Saturday, overturning Jorge Martín’s advantage in a thrilling contest at the Mandalika International Circuit.
The Ducati Lenovo Team rider claimed victory in the 13-lap sprint ahead of Trackhouse Aprilia’s Ai Ogura and Fabio Di Giannantonio of VR46 Ducati, while Martín finished fourth after surrendering the lead in the closing stages.
Márquez’s victory earned him 12 points, taking his championship tally to 343 and putting him four points ahead of Martín, who has 339 with five race weekends remaining after Indonesia.
First-corner crash changes the race
The sprint began with immediate drama as pole-sitter Raúl Fernández and Marco Bezzecchi collided at the first corner, forcing both riders out of the race.
The incident opened the door for Martín to take the lead, with Márquez settling into second place and Di Giannantonio also remaining in contention.
Martín initially made the most of the opportunity, building a gap of approximately 1.5 seconds over Márquez by the halfway stage. The Aprilia rider appeared well positioned to strengthen his championship challenge with a sprint victory.
However, the race took another unexpected turn when Martín suddenly slowed, allowing Márquez to move into the lead.
Márquez holds off late Ogura challenge
After inheriting first place, Márquez concentrated on managing his advantage as the closing laps approached.
Martín attempted to recover and close the gap, but he ran wide at Turn 15 while trying to maintain the pressure, dropping out of the podium positions.
Ogura capitalised on the late drama to move into second, while Di Giannantonio secured third. The Japanese rider made a final push on the last lap but could not get close enough to challenge Márquez for victory.
Márquez crossed the line to secure his first sprint win at Mandalika, completing a significant turnaround in the championship battle.
Championship battle swings Márquez’s way
The victory lifted Márquez to 343 points, four ahead of Martín on 339. It marked the first time this season that Márquez had led the championship standings.
The result was particularly important given how close the two Spaniards had been throughout the race. Martín had entered the sprint with the opportunity to strengthen his position but ultimately lost ground after his late mistake.
With five race weekends still to come, the championship remains finely balanced. The Indonesian sprint has given Márquez the advantage, but the points gap is small enough for the standings to change again.
Indonesian Grand Prix race awaits
Attention now turns to Sunday’s Indonesian Grand Prix, where the riders will compete for the full race points.
A grand prix victory awards 25 points, compared with 12 for a sprint win, meaning Martín will have an immediate opportunity to respond to Márquez’s championship lead.
Márquez, meanwhile, will aim to convert his Saturday success into another strong result and maintain his advantage in the title fight.
After a sprint defined by crashes, changing fortunes and a late challenge, the main race promises another important chapter in the battle for the 2026 MotoGP crown.
