Manchester United surrender late as ten-man Tottenham snatch dramatic Old Trafford draw

Manchester, England — Manchester United missed the opportunity to secure a crucial Premier League victory after Dominic Solanke scored a stoppage-time equaliser to earn Tottenham Hotspur a 1–1 draw at Old Trafford on Saturday, 10 October 2026.

Bryan Mbeumo put United ahead in the 73rd minute, but Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal five minutes later failed to prevent Tottenham from rescuing a point. Solanke headed home in the 90th minute plus two to punish United’s defensive lapse and leave the home supporters frustrated.

The result extended United’s winless run to four matches in all competitions and increased the pressure on manager Michael Carrick.

Tottenham dominate early exchanges

Tottenham started brightly and created several promising opportunities during a first half in which United struggled to establish control.

Mohammed Kudus threatened early, while Dominic Solanke also had opportunities to give the visitors the lead. United goalkeeper Senne Lammens was fortunate to recover after an early mistake nearly gifted Spurs an opening goal.

Despite Tottenham’s territorial advantage, the visitors could not convert their chances. United went into half-time with the score goalless, having struggled to produce a convincing attacking response.

Mbeumo breaks the deadlock

United improved after the interval and began to create more threatening moments.

The breakthrough arrived in the 73rd minute when Luke Shaw played the ball forward to Matheus Cunha on the left. Cunha delivered a cross into the penalty area, where Mbeumo turned and finished to give United a 1–0 lead.

The goal appeared to put Carrick’s side on course for a much-needed victory after a difficult spell of results.

However, the match soon took another dramatic turn.

Bentancur sent off after confrontation

Tottenham’s hopes of recovering suffered a major setback in the 78th minute when Bentancur was sent off following a confrontation with Shaw.

The incident followed an aggressive challenge by the Tottenham midfielder, which sparked a heated exchange between players from both teams.

Referee Stuart Attwell dismissed Bentancur, while Shaw and Jan Paul van Hecke also received yellow cards during the aftermath.

United now had both the lead and a numerical advantage, seemingly placing them in a strong position to see out the contest.

Solanke strikes late to silence Old Trafford

Despite playing with 10 men, Tottenham continued to push forward and were rewarded in the second minute of stoppage time.

Sandro Tonali delivered a cross from the left, and Solanke battled past Lisandro Martínez to head the ball beyond Lammens and make it 1–1.

The late goal stunned the home crowd and denied United a victory that had appeared within reach.

Tottenham’s equaliser reflected their persistence after a frustrating afternoon in front of goal, while United were left to regret their inability to protect the advantage against a depleted opponent.

Pressure mounts on Carrick after another setback

The draw leaves Manchester United 12th in the Premier League table with six points from their opening six matches, according to reports following the game.

United showed some improvement after the break, but their inability to manage the closing stages will raise further questions about their consistency and defensive organisation.

Tottenham, meanwhile, earned a valuable point but remain without a league victory this season. The result moved them off the bottom of the table and offered encouragement after another difficult start.

United must now turn their attention to their upcoming Champions League trip to Atlético Madrid, while Carrick faces renewed scrutiny as he attempts to revive his side’s season.
