Malawi Thrash Zimbabwe 7-0 to Seal Olympic Qualifier Progress

HARARE, Zimbabwe — Malawi’s Scorchers produced a dominant display to defeat Zimbabwe 7-0 in the second leg of their 2028 Olympic Games qualifying tie on Tuesday, completing a 10-0 aggregate victory.

The result sends Malawi into the next round of the CAF Women’s Olympic Qualifiers, where they will face either Kenya or Seychelles.

Temwa Chawinga led the way with a hat-trick, scoring in the 10th, 30th and 56th minutes. Her sister and captain Tabitha Chawinga added a fourth goal in the 52nd minute.

Chisomo Banda made it 5-0 in the 83rd minute, before Asimenye Simwaka and Sarah Mulimbika completed the scoring late on in the 86th and 90th minutes respectively.

Malawi had taken a 2-0 lead from the first leg in Lilongwe on Friday, also courtesy of the Chawinga sisters. The second-leg performance in Harare left no doubt about their superiority over the two legs.

The Scorchers, who reached the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on their debut and secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, continue their strong form in the Olympic qualifying campaign.

Zimbabwe were unable to respond as Malawi controlled proceedings from start to finish at the National Sports Stadium.
