Salé, Morocco — Kenya’s Junior Starlets have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup following a 3-1 defeat to Japan in their Round of 16 encounter on Thursday, 29 October.
The East African side made a promising start and took the lead through Brenda Achieng, but Japan responded with three goals to overturn the deficit and secure their place in the quarter-finals.
Despite the disappointment, Kenya’s second appearance at the global tournament produced a historic achievement, with the team reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
Achieng gives Kenya early hope
Kenya started confidently against the 2014 champions and took the lead in the 29th minute.
Brenda Achieng produced an excellent finish to put the Junior Starlets ahead, becoming the first player to score against Japan at the tournament.
However, the lead lasted only seven minutes. Mei Hanashiro restored parity in the 36th minute, finishing after Japan worked the ball into a dangerous attacking position.
Both teams went into the interval level at 1-1, leaving the contest finely balanced.
Japan complete second-half comeback
Japan returned from the break with greater attacking intensity and eventually took the lead in the 59th minute through Nanami Kurita.
The goal shifted the momentum firmly in favour of the Asian side, who continued to dominate possession and create opportunities.
Asuka Tanaka then extended Japan’s advantage in the 75th minute, finishing to make it 3-1 and put the result beyond Kenya’s reach.
The Junior Starlets attempted to respond, but Japan managed the closing stages effectively to secure the victory.
Kenya bow out after historic campaign
The defeat brings Kenya’s campaign to an end at the Round of 16, but their progress represents a significant step forward for the country’s women’s youth football.
The Junior Starlets had secured their knockout-stage qualification with a convincing 4-0 victory over Samoa after earlier defeats to China and the United States.
Head coach Mildred Cheche praised her players despite the elimination, expressing pride in their performance and the improvement they had shown compared with previous matches.
Kenya also made history against Japan by becoming the first team to score against the Asian side at the 2026 tournament.
Japan set up quarter-final clash with Ghana
Japan advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face fellow African side Ghana.
The Japanese have maintained their remarkable record of reaching at least the quarter-finals in every edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, extending that sequence to ten consecutive tournaments.
For Kenya, attention now turns to building on the experience gained in Morocco as the country continues developing its next generation of women footballers.
