Inter Lagos appoint Olusanjo Olutayo as interim head coach after Shakiru Giwa’s exit

Lagos — Inter Lagos have appointed Olusanjo Olutayo as interim head coach following the departure of Shakiru Giwa, handing the tactician the responsibility of turning around the club’s difficult start to the 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.

The club announced Olutayo’s appointment on Wednesday, 14 October 2026, welcoming him to the role as they prepare for their next league fixture.

His arrival comes a day after Giwa’s departure was announced following the club’s decision to dissolve its technical crew amid a disappointing run of results.

Inter Lagos struggle after promotion

Inter Lagos have found life in the NPFL challenging since securing promotion from the Nigeria National League (NNL) last season.

After eight league matches, the Lagos-based club had collected just two points and were yet to record a victory. Their latest setback was a 3–1 defeat away to Warri Wolves on 11 October.

The poor start has left the newly promoted side under pressure to improve their results and avoid becoming further detached from the teams above them.

Olutayo takes over from Giwa

Giwa played an important role in Inter Lagos’ rise to the Nigerian top flight, guiding the club to promotion before their struggles at the start of the current campaign.

His departure marked a significant change in the club’s technical leadership, with Olutayo now tasked with stabilising the team and restoring confidence among the players.

Olutayo has experience in Lagos football, having previously been involved with Sporting Lagos before moving to G12. His appointment offers Inter Lagos an opportunity to draw on his familiarity with the local football environment as they seek to improve their league position.

The club has not publicly confirmed how long he will remain in charge or whether the interim appointment will eventually become permanent.

Nasarawa United next for Inter Lagos

Olutayo’s immediate task is to prepare Inter Lagos for their Matchday Nine encounter against Nasarawa United on Sunday, 18 October, at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos.

The fixture provides the interim coach with an early opportunity to begin rebuilding the team’s momentum in front of their home supporters.

Inter Lagos will need to improve their performance at both ends of the pitch if they are to secure their first league victory of the campaign.

With the season still in its early stages, the club will hope the coaching change can provide the impetus needed to move away from the foot of the table and establish themselves in the NPFL.
