SALÉ, Morocco — Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Mexico 2-1 in their Round of 16 encounter on Thursday, 29 October.
Oluebube Umejiaku and Mary Dunstan scored for Nigeria as coach Hakeem Busari’s side continued their impressive campaign in Morocco. Mexico pulled a goal back through Emily Delgado in added time, but the Flamingos held on to secure progression to the last eight.
Umejiaku breaks Mexico’s resistance
Nigeria started with attacking intent, looking to build on their impressive 3-1 group-stage victory over defending champions Korea DPR.
Mexico initially resisted the pressure, but the Flamingos eventually found a breakthrough in the 39th minute when Umejiaku scored to give Nigeria a 1-0 lead.
The goal rewarded Nigeria’s persistence and provided a valuable advantage before half-time in a contest where both teams were fighting for a place in the quarter-finals.
Dunstan doubles Nigeria’s advantage
Nigeria continued to press after the restart and strengthened their position in the 70th minute when Dunstan found the net to make it 2-0.
The second goal gave the Flamingos greater control of the encounter and left Mexico needing a response in the closing stages.
Nigeria’s defensive organisation proved important as the Mexicans attempted to get back into the game, with the African side working to protect their two-goal cushion.
Late Mexico goal sets up tense finish
Mexico refused to give up and found a late consolation through Delgado in added time.
The goal created a nervy finish for Nigeria, but the Flamingos maintained their composure to see out the remaining minutes and confirm a 2-1 victory.
The result means Nigeria advance to the quarter-finals, while Mexico’s campaign comes to an end at the Round of 16 stage.
Flamingos keep World Cup ambitions alive
The victory represents another important step for Nigeria, who recovered from an opening defeat to Poland by beating Puerto Rico and Korea DPR to reach the knockout stage.
Their win over Mexico now gives the Flamingos an opportunity to continue their pursuit of the U17 Women’s World Cup title.
Nigeria will turn their attention to their quarter-final opponents as they seek to build on the confidence gained from victories over the defending champions and Mexico.
