Edo Queens lose 3-2 to Ampem Darkoa after dramatic extra-time finish

Cairo, Egypt — Edo Queens have missed out on qualification for the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League after losing 3-2 to Ghanaian champions Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the remaining 30 minutes of extra time in the WAFU Zone B qualifying final on Thursday, 29 October 2026.

The decisive encounter resumed with the score at 2-2 following the teams’ original meeting in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, on 5 September. Ampem Darkoa struck just two minutes into extra time to take the lead and ultimately secure the qualification ticket.

Ampem Darkoa strike early

The early goal put Edo Queens under immediate pressure as the Nigerian champions attempted to find an equaliser and keep their continental hopes alive.

Ampem Darkoa defended their advantage despite late pressure from Edo Queens, holding on to complete a 3-2 victory and book their place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League.

How the controversial final was decided

Edo Queens had initially been declared winners of the WAFU Zone B final after a 4-1 penalty shootout victory, following a 2-2 draw in regulation time in September.

However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) annulled the shootout result after ruling that the teams should have played two 15-minute periods of extra time before penalties.

Following the unsuccessful appeal against the decision, the teams were ordered to complete the outstanding 30 minutes at a neutral venue in Cairo, with the score remaining 2-2.

The resumption gave both sides another opportunity to settle the contest on the pitch, but Ampem Darkoa took advantage of the second chance to secure the win.

Ampem Darkoa qualify for continental competition

The victory confirms Ampem Darkoa Ladies as the WAFU Zone B representatives at the 2026 CAF Women’s Champions League, scheduled to take place in Egypt from 1 to 15 November.

The Ghanaian champions will compete in Group B alongside defending champions AS FAR of Morocco, Kawempe Muslim Ladies of Uganda and USFAS Bamako of Mali.

For Edo Queens, the defeat ends their hopes of participating in this year’s continental tournament after a qualification campaign overshadowed by the dispute over the original final.
