Cleveland, USA — The Cleveland Guardians defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in a tightly contested Game 3 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) on Thursday, October 15, to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Petey Halpin delivered the decisive moment with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, while Cleveland’s pitching staff held firm to secure an important victory at Progressive Field.
Halpin’s home run proves decisive
The Guardians opened the scoring in the third inning when Nathaniel Lowe struck an RBI double to right field, bringing Jo Adell home from first base.
Tampa Bay responded in the fourth inning after Chandler Simpson produced a two-run triple, scoring Yandy Díaz and Victor Mesa Jr. to give the Rays a 2-1 advantage.
Cleveland regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Following a single by Patrick Bailey, Halpin drove a two-run homer to right field off Rays starter Griffin Jax, putting the Guardians ahead 3-2.
The home run was Halpin’s first of the postseason and ultimately proved to be the difference between the teams.
Williams and bullpen deliver for Cleveland
Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams produced an impressive performance, recording nine strikeouts across five innings. He allowed two runs on two hits and one walk before handing the game over to Cleveland’s bullpen.
Daniel Espino, Erik Sabrowski and Cade Smith helped preserve the narrow lead, with Smith recording a four-out save.
Cleveland’s relievers shut down Tampa Bay’s late attempts to equalise, retiring 15 of the Rays’ final 16 batters. The Rays finished with only three hits and struck out 13 times.
Tampa Bay’s Griffin Jax allowed three earned runs on five hits over his outing, while relievers Tyler Wells and Steven Matz kept the Guardians scoreless in their respective relief appearances after the fifth inning.
Rays miss late opportunity
The Rays had a chance to level the contest in the eighth inning, with Jorge Mateo reaching third base as the potential tying run. However, Smith struck out Díaz after a 10-pitch battle to end the threat.
Smith then retired Tampa Bay in order in the ninth to seal the victory for Cleveland.
Guardians move closer to the World Series
The result gives Cleveland a 2-1 advantage in the ALCS, putting the team two wins away from advancing to the World Series. The Guardians will also host the next two games, giving them an opportunity to finish the series on home soil.
The Rays, meanwhile, must respond in Game 4 to avoid falling further behind in the series.
Game 4 is scheduled for Friday, October 16, in Cleveland, with Tampa Bay looking to level the series and the Guardians aiming to move within one win of the American League pennant.
