Buccaneers defeat Cowboys 24–16 as Jalon Daniels and Bucky Irving inspire first win

Arlington, United States — The Tampa Bay Buccaneers secured their first victory of the 2026 National Football League (NFL) season after defeating the Dallas Cowboys 24–16 in a hard-fought Week 5 encounter at AT&T Stadium on Thursday night.

Rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels delivered a composed performance in place of injured starter Baker Mayfield, while running back Bucky Irving produced a standout display to help Tampa Bay end its four-game losing streak.

The Cowboys, who entered the contest with a 2–2 record, were unable to protect their early advantage as turnovers and Tampa Bay’s dominant running game proved decisive.

Daniels steps up in Mayfield’s absence

Daniels completed 19 of his 25 passes for 189 yards and one touchdown without throwing an interception, guiding the Buccaneers to their first win of the campaign.

The rookie showed composure under pressure, avoiding costly mistakes and allowing Tampa Bay’s running game to dictate the tempo for long periods.

His performance was particularly important given the absence of Mayfield, who was sidelined through injury.

Daniels’ efficient display provided the Buccaneers with stability at quarterback and helped them capitalise on opportunities as the game progressed.

Irving powers Tampa Bay’s running game

Irving was central to Tampa Bay’s victory, recording a career-high 165 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown, while also scoring through the air.

His powerful running repeatedly troubled the Dallas defence, including a spectacular 72-yard burst in the first half that helped shift momentum towards the visitors.

The Buccaneers finished with 241 rushing yards, controlling possession for 39 minutes and 21 seconds compared with Dallas’ 20 minutes and 39 seconds.

That advantage allowed Tampa Bay to sustain drives, keep the Cowboys’ offence off the field and manage the closing stages of the contest.

Cowboys lose control after promising start

Dallas made the stronger start when running back Javonte Williams scored a touchdown to give the hosts a 7–0 lead in the opening quarter.

The Cowboys maintained their advantage into the second quarter, with Brandon Aubrey adding a field goal to make it 10–7 before half-time.

Tampa Bay took control after the break, scoring 17 unanswered points in the third quarter to establish a 24–10 lead.

Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott finished with 316 passing yards and one touchdown, but two interceptions contributed to the hosts’ problems. The Cowboys committed three turnovers overall.

Wide receiver George Pickens recorded nine receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown, but his efforts were not enough to prevent the defeat.

Anzalone interception seals Buccaneers’ victory

Dallas attempted a late comeback in the fourth quarter, scoring to reduce the deficit to 24–16 and threatening to make the finish uncomfortable for Tampa Bay.

With the Cowboys driving deep into Buccaneers territory late in the game, linebacker Alex Anzalone intercepted a deflected Prescott pass to halt the rally.

Tampa Bay then relied on Irving to gain a crucial first down and run down the clock, securing the long-awaited victory.

The late defensive intervention proved decisive, preventing Dallas from having another opportunity to close the gap.

Contrasting fortunes after Week 5

The result moved Tampa Bay to 1–4, giving the Buccaneers a much-needed boost after four consecutive defeats to begin their season.

Dallas dropped to 2–3, falling below .500 after missing the opportunity to strengthen its position in the NFC East.

The Buccaneers will look to build on the performance when they face the Pittsburgh Steelers on 18 October, while the Cowboys will seek a response as they continue their campaign.

For Tampa Bay, the combination of Daniels’ composure, Irving’s explosive running and a decisive defensive play offered encouragement as the team attempts to recover from its difficult start.
