Borussia Dortmund held to goalless draw by Union Berlin as winless run continues

Berlin, Germany — Borussia Dortmund were forced to settle for a 0-0 draw against Union Berlin at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Saturday, 17 October 2026, after struggling to convert their possession into clear-cut scoring opportunities.

The result means Dortmund have now gone three matches without a victory across all competitions, following their Champions League defeat to Bodø/Glimt and a previous Bundesliga draw. The Black and Yellows also dropped points in the league for the second consecutive game.

Dortmund dominate possession but lack cutting edge

Head coach Niko Kovač made five changes to his starting line-up following Wednesday’s European setback, bringing Nico Schlotterbeck, Julian Ryerson, Felix Nmecha, Ethan Nwaneri and Serhou Guirassy into the side.

Dortmund started aggressively, winning their share of individual duels and controlling 63 per cent of possession in the first half. However, their dominance did not translate into enough meaningful chances against a determined Union Berlin defence.

The visitors’ afternoon also began with controversy when Nwaneri was initially shown a red card for a sliding challenge on Tom Rothe inside the opening minute. Referee Daniel Schlager quickly corrected the decision to a yellow card.

Waldemar Anton and Guirassy were also booked early in a physical encounter, while Union’s Janik Haberer and Rothe received cautions of their own.

Dortmund came closest to breaking the deadlock late in the first half, but Union goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was not the only player required to remain alert. Kastriot Imeri forced a strong save from Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a dangerous free-kick in stoppage time.

Missed chances after the break

Dortmund showed greater attacking intent after half-time but continued to struggle in the final third.

Maximilian Beier came close in the 56th minute when he narrowly missed the target after connecting with a cross from Ryerson. Union responded through Tim Skarke, who failed to take advantage of a promising opportunity following a defensive error.

Guirassy later threatened with a header from a Ryerson delivery, but Dortmund could not find the breakthrough.

Union also had opportunities to snatch a late winner, with Felix Uduokhai heading off target and Dortmund substitute Mathis Albert unable to make the most of a dangerous ball into the penalty area.

Despite their late pressure, Dortmund left Berlin without a goal.

Injury concern for Konstantinos Karetsas

Dortmund’s frustrations were compounded by an injury to Konstantinos Karetsas, who had come on as a substitute.

The young midfielder was forced off after suffering an ankle injury, prompting further concern for a Dortmund side already dealing with a difficult run of results. His condition will require further medical assessment.

Waldemar Anton stands out

Although Dortmund struggled to create decisive opportunities, Anton delivered a strong defensive performance.

The centre-back was influential in individual battles, won important challenges and also threatened at the other end of the pitch. His performance earned him the Bundesliga’s Man of the Match recognition.

What the result means

The draw leaves Dortmund with another missed opportunity to strengthen their position near the top of the Bundesliga table. Their inability to turn possession into goals remains a concern as they seek to recover from their recent setbacks.

For Union Berlin, the point represents a hard-earned result against one of the league’s leading sides, although they remain in the bottom three.

Dortmund must now improve their attacking efficiency and rediscover their winning form as the season continues.

Full-time: Union Berlin 0-0 Borussia Dortmund

Goals: None.
