Birmingham, England — Aston Villa were forced to settle for a 2–2 draw against Brentford at Villa Park on Saturday after Kristoffer Ajer scored a late equaliser, cancelling out John McGinn’s deflected effort and extending the hosts’ wait for a home victory.
In a lively Premier League encounter, both sides responded quickly to conceding, producing an entertaining contest that swung back and forth. Villa recovered from an early deficit and looked set to claim all three points before Brentford struck again.
Yarmolyuk gives Brentford an early lead
Brentford started aggressively and took the lead in the 10th minute through Yehor Yarmolyuk, who capitalised on a defensive error by Tyrone Mings.
Jaidon Anthony’s pressing forced Mings into a loose pass, allowing Brentford to move forward. Kevin Schade then helped create the opening, with the ball eventually falling to Yarmolyuk, who fired home from the edge of the penalty area.
Villa responded almost immediately. Just 88 seconds later, Nicolas Jackson equalised after Emiliano Buendía’s effort took a deflection and fell favourably inside the box. Jackson reacted quickly to finish from close range and restore parity.
Goalkeepers keep the contest level
The first half continued at a high tempo, with both teams creating opportunities to take the lead.
Buendía missed a promising chance for Villa after Brentford defender Michael Kayode produced an important block to deny Johan Manzambi.
At the other end, Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher made an impressive double save shortly before half-time, keeping out efforts from Jackson and McGinn to ensure the teams went into the break level.
McGinn puts Villa ahead
Brentford continued to threaten after the restart, with Schade forcing Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into a save.
Villa gradually increased their pressure and found what appeared to be the winning goal in the 77th minute.
Manzambi played the ball into McGinn, whose shot took a deflection off Ajer before looping beyond Kelleher and into the net.
The goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters, as Villa moved ahead 2–1 with time running out.
Ajer responds to restore parity
Brentford refused to surrender and found an immediate response.
Just two minutes after McGinn’s goal, Ajer advanced into the Villa penalty area and finished after being set up by Jaidon Anthony. His effort took a slight deflection off Victor Lindelöf, leaving Suzuki unable to prevent the equaliser.
The Norwegian defender had been involved in both sides’ second-half goals, first deflecting McGinn’s shot into the net before scoring at the opposite end.
Villa pushed for a late winner, but Brentford remained dangerous and held on to secure a point.
Villa’s home struggles continue
The draw will frustrate Unai Emery, whose side missed the opportunity to turn their second-half advantage into a victory.
Brentford, meanwhile, maintained their unbeaten league start under Keith Andrews and demonstrated their resilience by twice recovering from behind.
Villa’s next challenge will be to improve their home form, while Brentford can take encouragement from another determined performance on the road.
