Tokyo, Japan — Alexandra Eala is determined to finish her breakthrough 2026 season strongly after suffering a three-set defeat to Diana Shnaider in the quarter-finals of the Toray Pan Pacific Open.
The 21-year-old Filipina lost 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 to the Russian third seed on Friday, 30 October, ending her debut campaign at the WTA 500 tournament in Tokyo.
Despite the disappointment, Eala said she remained highly motivated ahead of her final tournament of the season in Hong Kong next week.
Shnaider fights back after Eala's strong start
Eala made an impressive start, winning the opening set 6-2 after finding her rhythm and putting Shnaider under pressure.
The second set developed into a much tighter contest, with neither player managing to break serve. Shnaider eventually edged the tie-break 7-5 to level the match and force a deciding set.
The Russian then secured an early break in the third set, putting Eala under pressure as the match entered its decisive stages.
Eala received treatment on her right foot, but Shnaider maintained her advantage and sealed the 6-4 set victory with an ace after two hours and 52 minutes on court.
Eala proud of her performance despite defeat
Speaking after the match, Eala described the encounter as a huge battle and acknowledged that she had opportunities to win.
She said both players had produced a high level of tennis and expressed pride in her performance despite the result.
The Filipina also admitted that she hoped to handle the important moments better when she next faced a similar challenge.
Eala received strong support from Filipino fans in Tokyo and said playing in front of such an enthusiastic crowd made the experience special.
Breakthrough season continues for Eala
The Tokyo campaign is another significant milestone in a memorable year for Eala.
In August, she became the first player from the Philippines to win a singles title on the WTA Tour when she lifted the trophy in Washington.
She has also established herself inside the world's top 20, reaching a career-high ranking of 19.
Her run in Tokyo included a comeback victory over Australia's Talia Gibson in the second round, where she recovered from losing the opening set to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-0.
Hong Kong provides one final opportunity
Eala will now turn her attention to next week's tournament in Hong Kong, which represents her final competitive assignment of the season.
The Filipina made it clear that she was eager to return to the court, saying she was excited and approaching the tournament with high motivation.
Rather than reflecting on her achievements immediately, Eala explained that she wanted to postpone those reflections until after the Hong Kong event.
Her focus will be on carrying the positive aspects of her Tokyo performance into the final tournament of what has been a landmark year for Philippine tennis.
