AC Milan 2-4 Bologna: Mbangula hat-trick stuns Rossoneri at San Siro

MILAN, Italy — AC Milan suffered their first Serie A defeat of the season on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, after Bologna produced a stunning second-half comeback to win 4-2 at San Siro.

Samuel Mbangula scored a hat-trick for Bologna, while Alphadjo Cisse struck twice for Milan in an entertaining contest that saw the hosts surrender a first-half lead.

Milan had recovered from an early setback to lead 2-1 at the break, but Bologna scored three times after half-time to claim an impressive away victory and end the Rossoneri’s unbeaten league run.

Mbangula strikes early as Milan respond

Bologna made a strong start and took the lead in the eighth minute when Mbangula found the net, giving the visitors an early advantage.

Milan responded quickly, with Cisse levelling the score in the 14th minute after a move initiated by high pressing from the home side. The young forward continued to trouble Bologna’s defence and struck again in the 27th minute to put Milan ahead 2-1.

Fikayo Tomori helped create the second goal with a driven cross that Cisse converted, completing his brace and turning the contest around.

Milan looked to have taken control before the interval, although Bologna remained dangerous and continued to look for opportunities to get back into the game.

Bologna fight back after the break

Bologna returned from half-time with renewed determination and began putting Milan under sustained pressure.

Their equaliser arrived in the 60th minute when a free-kick delivery from Juan Miranda was inadvertently turned into his own net by Davide Bartesaghi.

The visitors needed only another minute to take the lead. Miranda again played a decisive role, setting up Mbangula to score his second goal of the evening and make it 3-2.

Milan attempted to respond, introducing attacking options in search of another equaliser. Francesco Camarda came close with a header, while Christian Pulisic also tested goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski late in the game.

However, Bologna defended their advantage and looked increasingly dangerous on the counter-attack as Milan committed players forward.

Mbangula completes his hat-trick

Bologna sealed the victory in the 86th minute when Mbangula completed his hat-trick.

Jens Odgaard provided the assist, allowing the forward to finish from inside the area and put the result beyond doubt at 4-2.

The hat-trick capped a memorable performance from Mbangula, who had opened the scoring before delivering two decisive finishes in the second half.

For Milan, the defeat was particularly disappointing after their first-half comeback and the prospect of maintaining their unbeaten league record.

Milan turn attention to the derby

The defeat ended Milan’s run of consecutive league victories and handed head coach Ruben Amorim a setback ahead of a demanding run of fixtures.

The Rossoneri must now regroup quickly, with the derby against Inter Milan scheduled for Saturday, 31 October. The result against Bologna leaves Milan with questions to address defensively, particularly after conceding three second-half goals.

Bologna, meanwhile, will take confidence from a comeback that demonstrated their attacking threat and ability to punish mistakes. Mbangula’s three goals made him the standout performer in a victory that will be remembered as one of the team’s notable results of the campaign.
